What a home setup costs to run
We cannot print product prices — this site has no live price data and will not publish figures it cannot verify. What we can do is tell you exactly what the cost is made of, so you can add it up at a checkout:
One-off: a kit (base, color, top, lamp), or a lamp plus separate bottles. That is the entire capital cost. A lamp outlives several kits.
Per manicure: a fraction of each bottle. Gelish sells 15 mL bottles and states its starter kit covers 18+ manicures, which is the most useful per-manicure figure any brand here publishes.
Per removal: acetone, cotton, and plastic wrap or a pack of wraps. Makartt sells 200 wraps, which is roughly twenty removals.
Ongoing: new colors, whenever you want them. This is the discretionary part and it is where home gel budgets actually go.
The break-even, worked through
Two things people leave out of that sum and should not.
Your time. A home gel manicure including removal is roughly forty minutes. A salon appointment is an hour plus travel plus booking. Home usually wins, but not as dramatically as the money suggests.
The failure rate. Your first two or three attempts will not last as long as a salon set, because prep and cure are skills. Budget for that honestly rather than being disappointed — the learning curve is real and it is short.
The cheaper answers, if cost is the whole point
Gel is not the cheapest route to nails that look done, and it would be dishonest to imply it is.
Long-wear lacquer needs no equipment at all and publishes up to 11 to 15 days. Three bottles cover many manicures. See lamp-free systems.
