This hub ranks wear, not color

Most nail polish coverage ranks shades. This one ranks how many days a manicure survives, because a color you love that chips on day two is not a bargain — and because chip resistance is the thing that is actually different between products, where shade is a matter of taste.

The useful framing is that a manicure is a laminate: base coat, two color coats, top coat. Like any laminate it fails at its edges, which is why chips essentially always start at the free edge and work backwards. Almost everything that extends wear is about sealing those edges and getting the layers to grip.

Which means the single highest-return habit in this entire category costs nothing: capping the free edge. Run the brush along the very tip of the nail with every coat, including the base and the top. Five seconds per nail, and it is worth more days than switching brands.

Base coat, color, top coat — and which does what

The base coat is the most-skipped and highest-return step. A rubberized base flexes with the nail instead of cracking — ORLY's own analogy for Bonder is double-sided sticky tape, and it claims adhesion up to two weeks. At the other end, a fast-dry top coat does two jobs: it adds a sacrificial layer that takes the knocks, and it shortens the window in which you can still ruin the manicure. How long regular polish can realistically last

Long-wear lacquer systems publish real numbers: essie Gel Couture up to 15 days with a top coat reapplication on day seven, OPI Infinite Shine up to 11 days across its three steps. Both air-dry, need no lamp, and remove in two minutes with ordinary remover.

Two weeks is roughly the ceiling, and the limit is not the formula — it is that nails grow. By day twelve to fourteen there is visible regrowth at the cuticle regardless of how intact the polish is, and most people repaint for that reason rather than because of chips.
