Chips start in one place, every time
Look at any chipped manicure and the damage starts at the free edge — the very tip of the nail — and works backwards. It almost never begins in the middle of the nail plate.
That tells you what to fix. The free edge is the thinnest, most exposed and most-knocked part of the manicure, and it is the part almost everybody fails to coat. The technique is called capping: after each coat, including the top coat, run the brush along the edge of the nail itself, sealing polish around the tip rather than stopping at it.
Capping adds about five seconds per nail and it is worth more days than switching brands.

These are lacquer systems, not gel — they air-dry and remove with ordinary polish remover. What makes them last is a matched base and top coat working with the color, which is why using a third-party top coat over them undercuts the claim.
If you want longer than about two weeks, you are into actual gel, with a lamp and a soak-off removal.
The base coat does more than people think
A rubberized base coat is the most underrated product in this category. ORLY describes Bonder as working like double-sided sticky tape and claims adhesion up to two weeks; the rubberized resin flexes with the nail instead of cracking, which is why polish over it peels less.
At the other end, a fast-dry top coat does two jobs: it adds a sacrificial layer that takes the knocks, and it gets you out of the danger window sooner. Seche Vite's formula penetrates through the color to the base coat to form one solid coating rather than sitting on top, which is a genuinely different mechanism.
Three habits that cost nothing
- Thin coats. Two thin coats dry through and bond properly. One thick coat stays soft underneath for hours and dents rather than drying.
- Gloves for washing up. The AAD notes that too much water exposure weakens nails, causing them to split, peel or break, and recommends gloves for cleaning and washing dishes. It protects your manicure and your actual nails at the same time.
- Stop using your nails as tools. Also straight from the AAD's healthy-nail guidance. Opening a can with your thumbnail is the end of that manicure and sometimes of that nail.

What nail polish doesn't chip?
Lamp-free long-wear systems last longest among regular polishes — essie publishes up to 15 days with a day-7 top coat refresh, OPI up to 11 days. Technique matters more than brand: capping the free edge is worth more days than a product switch.
Why does my nail polish chip after one day?
Usually coats applied too thickly, or the free edge left uncapped. Thick coats stay soft underneath and dent; an uncapped edge gives chips somewhere to start.
Does a base coat stop chipping?
It helps substantially. A rubberized base grips the color to the nail and flexes rather than cracking — ORLY claims adhesion up to two weeks for Bonder.
What is capping the free edge?
Running the brush along the tip of the nail with each coat so polish seals around the edge instead of stopping at it. It takes seconds and it is where most chip resistance comes from.
