Three different jobs, sold under one name
Top coats do not all do the same thing, and the disappointment people feel usually comes from buying one job and expecting another.

Seche Vite is a fast-dry that also adds wear, which is why it is the default recommendation. essie Gel Couture Shiny Top Coat is a long-wear system component and is not a fast-dry — using it when you wanted speed is a common mismatch.
The Seche Vite method is genuinely different
Most top coats sit on top of dry polish. Seche Vite is applied over wet polish, and the brand states the patented formula penetrates through the lacquer to the base coat, forming a single solid coating over the nail plate. That is a different mechanism from a surface layer, and it is why the whole stack behaves as one film rather than three.
The trade-off is that it is fussier. It must go on thick but not too thick, over wet color — and applied too heavily it can shrink at the free edge, pulling the color back from the tip. The fix is a thinner application, and the brand notes that a very thin layer is all it takes.
When to stay inside the system
If you are using a long-wear system — essie Gel Couture, OPI Infinite Shine — use its own top coat. essie states that the color and the Shiny Top Coat are formulated to work as a complete set to deliver the intended longwear and shine. Swapping in a different top coat means you are no longer using the system whose wear claim you bought.
For ordinary polish, a good fast-dry top coat is the single biggest upgrade available, and it works with everything you already own.

For most people, a fast-dry top coat that also adds wear — Seche Vite is the standard for that. If you are using a long-wear system, use its own matched top coat instead.
Do you apply Seche Vite to wet or dry polish?
Wet. It is designed to penetrate through the color to the base coat and form a single solid film, which only works over wet polish.
Why does my top coat shrink at the tips?
Applied too thickly. Use a thinner layer and cap the free edge with a deliberate final stroke rather than flooding it.
Can you use any top coat over any polish?
Over ordinary polish, yes. Over a long-wear system, use that system's own top coat — the wear claim assumes the matched pair.
Does top coat make polish last longer?
Yes. It is a sacrificial layer that takes the knocks and seals the free edge. Reapplying mid-week adds more days still.
