The brush decides more than the formula
If you have ever wondered why a cheap polish looks streaky and an expensive one does not, the answer is usually the brush rather than the pigment. A good brush is wide enough to cover most of the nail in one stroke, flexible enough to fan out against the cuticle, and loaded evenly when you wipe it against the neck of the bottle.
A narrow, stiff brush forces three or four strokes per nail, and every extra stroke drags half-set polish and creates ridges. Nothing in the formula can rescue that.
Coverage in two coats is the honest test
Two thin coats is the standard for a reason: it dries through, it bonds, and it is thin enough not to dent. A polish that needs three coats to look even is failing, and the practical cost is not the extra minute — it is that three coats of anything is now thick enough to stay soft underneath.
Pale nudes and sheer pinks are the hard case for every brand. If you mostly wear those, expect to need three coats regardless of price, or accept a sheer finish as the look.
Dry time, and the two numbers that matter
OPI publishes both figures for Infinite Shine, which is more useful than a single vague claim: touch-dry in five minutes, fully dry in twenty. The gap between those two numbers is the danger window — the period where a manicure looks finished and will still take a sheet imprint if you go to bed.
A fast-dry top coat compresses that window, which is its real job. Seche Vite is applied over wet polish and pulls the whole stack together as it sets, so it shortens the total rather than adding to it.
Removal is part of the product
The great advantage of regular polish over gel is that removal takes two minutes with ordinary remover — no soaking, no wraps, no filing. That matters more than it sounds, because removal is where nails get damaged: the AAD warns that picking or filing polish off significantly damages nails.
Worth knowing: Zoya Remove+ is widely described online as acetone-free and it is not — it contains acetone. It is a gentler, conditioning formula, which is a different and genuinely useful claim. If you are avoiding acetone entirely, this is not the bottle. See the remover roundup.

How many coats of nail polish should you apply?

How long does nail polish take to dry?
OPI publishes 5 minutes to touch-dry and 20 minutes to fully dry for Infinite Shine. The gap between those is when sheet marks happen.
Is expensive nail polish better?
Often, but mainly because of the brush and the pigment load rather than the wear. A good top coat over a cheap color outperforms an expensive color used alone.
