Soft and brittle are opposite problems
This is the distinction that makes the whole category make sense, and almost nobody explains it.
Soft, peeling nails bend rather than break, and separate into layers at the free edge. They usually need protein — Nailtiques is explicit that Formula 2 is for nails that are "soft, peeling, bitten, weak or thin".
Brittle nails snap cleanly rather than bending, and are usually dry rather than weak. They need moisture and flexibility, not more hardening. Putting a hardening treatment on an already-brittle nail makes it snap more easily, not less.
What works on bare natural nails
For soft or peeling nails, a protein treatment applied daily is the standard approach. Nailtiques directs one coat daily on clean dry nails, reducing frequency as they improve, with weekly removal using a non-acetone remover — and then a move down to Formula 1 once the target is reached. That graduated structure is unusual and sensible: it acknowledges you should stop at some point rather than treating forever.
OPI Nail Envy takes a layer-building approach — two coats on day one, one coat daily after, remove on day seven and restart. OPI claims nails are "95% stronger in 1 week"; that is the brand's own figure, not an independent finding, and it should be read as such.
Both can be worn alone, which matters if you want a treatment period without color. The AAD's general guidance supports giving nails periods without product.
Wearing color over weak nails
You do not have to choose between treating and wearing color. Both Nail Envy and Nailtiques Formula 2 double as base coats, so the treatment stays on the nail while color sits on top.
Two practical notes. Use a gentle remover — repeated acetone exposure dries the nail plate, which is the opposite of what a weak nail needs. And go easy on the filing: the AAD recommends filing to keep nails free of snags, but aggressive filing at the free edge is what starts the peeling on soft nails in the first place. A glass file cuts cleanly rather than shredding the edge.
What polish cannot fix
Worth being straight: a treatment polish works on the visible nail plate, which is dead keratin. It can bind and protect what is already there. It cannot change how the nail grows, because that happens in the matrix under the skin.
So a treatment improves the nail you have over days, and any real change in the nail you grow shows up over months. The AAD advises seeing a board-certified dermatologist if nails change, swell or cause pain, and that is the right call if the problem does not respond to basic care — persistent peeling and splitting can have causes a bottle will not address.
