Acetone or not: the real trade
Acetone dissolves polish quickly and strips oil from the nail plate and surrounding skin while it does so. Non-acetone removers use gentler solvents, take longer, and struggle with glitter and dark shades — but they are noticeably less drying.
The AAD's position on repeated acetone use is unambiguous: it causes nail dryness, brittleness, peeling and cracking. That is not an argument for never using acetone — it is an argument for using it deliberately and following it with oil.
What to use on natural nails specifically
If your nails are bare most of the time and you repaint weekly, a conditioning acetone remover is a reasonable default — it works quickly, so contact time is short, and the conditioning agents offset some of the drying. Gel needs a different product entirely
A bottle of remover and a cotton pad will not touch soak-off gel. Gel needs 100% acetone held against the nail for around ten minutes, which is what wraps and clips are for.
Worth repeating the AAD's specific guidance here, because it contradicts most product packaging: dermatologists recommend plastic food wrap rather than foil, because plastic creates a tighter seal and the acetone is less likely to drip. The step that makes acetone survivable
Oil, immediately, every time. The AAD directs working petroleum jelly into the cuticles daily for seven days after a gel removal; the same principle applies at smaller scale to ordinary polish removal. A jojoba-led cuticle oil absorbs into the nail plate rather than sitting on it, which is why CND SolarOil is the salon default.

No. It is widely described that way online, but Remove+ contains acetone. It is a gentler, conditioning 3-in-1 formula — remover, nail prep and conditioner — which is a different claim.
Is acetone bad for your nails?
Repeated use causes dryness, brittleness, peeling and cracking, per the AAD. Used briefly and followed with oil, it is manageable; used constantly with no aftercare, it is the main cause of "polish ruined my nails".
What is the best remover for natural nails?
A conditioning acetone remover for weekly repainting, or a non-acetone formula if your nails are already weak. Either way, oil immediately afterwards.
Can you remove gel polish with ordinary remover?
No. Soak-off gel needs 100% acetone held against the nail for about ten minutes, wrapped — the AAD recommends plastic food wrap over foil.
