The method dermatologists actually publish
The American Academy of Dermatology publishes a step-by-step home gel removal method from dermatologist Dr. Shari Lipner, and it is worth following exactly because it differs from what most product instructions say.
- Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly to each cuticle and the surrounding skin first, to protect it from the acetone.
- Cut cotton to nail size — about a quarter of a cotton ball for pinkies, half for the others.
- Saturate each piece in 100% acetone.
- Place the cotton on the nail and wrap with plastic food wrap, not foil. The AAD is explicit about why: plastic "creates a tighter seal than foil, so the acetone is less likely to drip."
- Leave for 10 minutes.
- Rub the softened polish away with a warm, damp washcloth.
- Wash with a mild, fragrance-free soap.
- Work petroleum jelly into the cuticles every day for seven days afterwards.
Where the products earn their place
Given that plastic wrap and cotton balls do the job, what are removal kits for? Speed and mess. Pre-cut foil wraps with cotton already attached remove the fiddly part — cutting cotton into ten pieces at the kitchen table — and they hold their shape on the finger.
Worth being straight about the trade: the AAD prefers plastic wrap to foil for sealing. A foil wrap kit is buying convenience, not the dermatologist-preferred material. If you have plastic wrap and cotton at home, you already have the better method for free.
Where kits genuinely help is heavy removals. Beetles' thicker cotton holds more acetone, which matters when you are taking off two or three layers of glitter gel — the case where a thin pad dries out before the gel has broken down.
Aftercare is not optional
Acetone strips oil from the nail plate and the surrounding skin. The AAD notes that repeated use causes dryness, brittleness, peeling and cracking — which is the real mechanism behind "gel ruined my nails". It is the removal, not the gel.
So: oil, daily, for at least a week afterwards. Petroleum jelly is what the AAD specifies; a jojoba-based cuticle oil does the same job and absorbs rather than sitting on the surface. If your nails are already damaged, work through repairing nails after gel.

Is foil or plastic wrap better for removing gel?
The AAD recommends plastic food wrap, because it creates a tighter seal than foil and the acetone is less likely to drip.
Can you remove gel polish without acetone?
Not effectively — soak-off gel is formulated to break down in acetone. The alternative is growing it out, which takes about six months for fingernails.
Does removing gel polish damage your nails?
Doing it badly does. Picking or filing gel off significantly damages the nail, and repeated acetone exposure causes dryness and brittleness. The wrap method plus daily oil afterwards avoids most of it.
How long should you soak gel polish?
About 10 minutes under a plastic wrap. If polish remains, re-wrap for longer rather than scraping at it.
