The thing that matters is whether your lamp cures it
Gel polish is a photo-initiated polymer. It hardens when the photoinitiator in the formula absorbs light at a specific wavelength. Different gels use different photoinitiators, which is why a gel and a lamp are a system, not two independent purchases.
Older UV formulas want around 365 nm; most modern LED-curable gels want around 405 nm. A lamp that emits only one of those will under-cure gels formulated for the other, and under-cured gel is the cause of the classic complaint: it looked fine, then peeled off in one piece a week later.
This is why dual-wavelength lamps are worth the small premium. The SUNUV SUN5 publishes 365 nm + 405 nm output, which covers both families. If you own a single-wavelength lamp, match your gel to it rather than the other way round.
Bottle size is the cost specification
Gel polish is sold in bottles from about 7 mL to 15 mL, and the price does not scale with the volume. Gelish sells a full 15 mL bottle, roughly double a typical consumer bottle, which changes the per-manicure cost substantially even at a professional price.
The other side of that trade is shade commitment. A 15 mL bottle of a color you turn out not to like is a long relationship. Beetles sells in multi-color sets, which is how most people actually build a usable wardrobe — cheaper per shade, and no single mistake is expensive.
Soak-off is a property of the gel, not a technique
"Soak-off" gels are formulated to break down in acetone. Hard gels and builder gels largely are not, and have to be filed off. This is a fundamental difference and it belongs in your buying decision, not your day-fourteen decision.
For a home manicure, buy soak-off. Filing gel off a natural nail is where the damage happens — see are nail drills safe? — and the acetone wrap method the American Academy of Dermatology publishes is safer and needs no equipment beyond cotton, acetone and plastic wrap.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best gel nail polish?
The one your lamp reliably cures. Gelish is the salon standard and sells in 15 mL bottles; Beetles is the volume option for building a color wardrobe cheaply.
Why does my gel polish peel off in one piece?
Under-curing. Either the coat was too thick to cure through, or your lamp's wavelength does not match the gel's photoinitiator. Dual-wavelength lamps avoid the second problem.
Can you use any gel polish with any lamp?
Not reliably. Gels cure at specific wavelengths — roughly 365 nm for older UV formulas and 405 nm for most LED-curable ones. A dual-wavelength lamp covers both.
What is the difference between soak-off and hard gel?
Soak-off gel dissolves in acetone; hard and builder gels generally have to be filed off. For home use, buy soak-off — filing is where nail damage happens.
