What coffin actually is
Coffin — ballerina, if you prefer the less morbid name — tapers along the sides like an almond but stops short of the point and squares off flat. The result is a shape with the lengthening effect of a taper and the deliberate, graphic look of a flat tip. It is unmistakably a manicure and it is not trying to be anything else.
It is also the shape that most rewards a longer length, which is why coffin sets skew long. A short coffin is a perfectly good shape and a slightly odd one, because the taper has very little distance in which to happen.
The trade you are making
Long tips are less durable, and the reason is leverage, not material. Every knock against a long tip applies a longer lever arm to the adhesive bond at the cuticle. The same glue, on the same nail, holds a short tip considerably longer than a long one. This is the single most reliable relationship in press-on wear and nobody advertises it.
Practically, long coffin also changes small things: typing, contact lenses, buttons, pulling a card out of a wallet. None of that is a reason not to buy them — it is a reason to buy them knowing.
Extra-long coffin, specifically
Extra-long sets are a genuine category rather than a marketing tier, and they need three adjustments.
- Full glue coverage is mandatory, not advisable. A partial bond under a long tip fails within a day.
- Expect to shorten them. Most extra-long sets can be filed back a few millimeters without ruining the shape, and the wear improvement is immediate.
- Plan the removal before you apply. A long tip gives you something substantial to pull on, which is exactly the temptation to avoid — see safe removal.
